Christen Kobke

I love this guy's work.

Christen (or Kristen) Kobke was born in Denmark and, along with Eckersberg (who was his mentor), was a very important figure in the Danish Golden Age of the 19th Century.

An outstanding artist all but forgotten in his own lifetime, Kobke's landscapes and portraits have a singularly Scandinavian sensibility when it comes to composition and color. They simply breathe light.

Here are two excellent examples of his trompe l'oeil painting. Unusual subject matter for him, but masterfully achieved nonetheless.

  1. As if composing bas relief osn't challenging enough...he had to render it in paint.

    Whew!
