Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues (circa 1533-1588) painted this wonderful series that I found in a Sotheby's catalog of Old Master Drawings.
These delicate gouache and gold leaf paintings are on vellum, and are approximately six inches by four and a half inches. With their small scale and hand-painted trompe l'oeil borders, they have a lovely jewel-like and intimate feel.
Unexpected loveliness.
